9/30/2018 - Section 115:1-5

September 30, 2018 Section 115:1-5 Name of the Church, Tribulations and Trials Getting Through Them, Go Forth in Faith, Standard to the Nations, Responsibility Our, This section was received nine days after section 114. The events around 114 occurred at a time of conflict and disunity within…and without…the church—when people once strong in their testimony, and once lifted up by their study and work within the church were angry with each other and with their situations, and in the middle of those hard times, made the decision to leave the church. And here, 9 days later, the Lord goes forward with building up the places where they lived. This section is addressed to the presiding officers of the church. V 3-4 are where Christ gives the official name of the church: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Prior to this moment, the church had been referred to by several different names: The Church of Christ, The Church of Jesus Christ, The church of God,, and The Chur...

9/28/2018 - Section 114:1-2

September 28, 2018 Section 114:1-2 Church History, Missouri Problems,  Kirtland Problems, The Last Days?, People Problems, There is a history associated with this short section. Elder David W Patten was one of the original Apostles. Church History and Modern Revelations, 2:85 says he “ had for some time been located in Missouri and with Elder Thomas B Marsh was maintaining a steady influence amidst the opposition of disaffected brethren, including the three who had been appointed to preside, David Whitmer, William W Phelps and John Whitmer. The Lord called upon Elder Patten [17 April 1838] to settle up his business as soon as possible, make a disposition of his merchandise, and prepare to take a mission the following spring, [the planned to leave 26 April 1939 for England] in company with others to preach the Gospel to all the world. ‘v 3 For verily thus saith the Lord, that inasmuch as there are those among you who deny my name, others shall be planted in their ...

9/27/2018 - Section 113:1-10

September 27, 2018 Section 113:1-10 Holy Ghost and me, Joseph Smith’s role, Joseph Smith and Kirtland, I did not know that when Joseph Smith left Kirtland in January of 1838, it was because there were people against the church there who were seeking his life. It was not a previously planned trip; he was fleeing to protect his life. And yet when he arrives in Far West, after their “long and tedious trip” he writes of the joy and love he felt as he was reunited with the saints of Missouri. There had been extremely hard times in both places, and they focused on rejoicing at being with each other again. And section 113 are some of the things they talked about. The history of the church does not know who asked the first questions about Isaiah—it may be that Joseph asked them on his own behalf. But we know that Elias Higbee asked the final questions. This tells me that in the midst of their hardships, they did not neglect their scripture studies. It’s difficult...

9/23/2018 - Section 112:12-34

September 23, 2018 Section112:12-34 Gospel Plan, Plan of Salvation, Our Turn on Earth, Godhead as our ‘coaching’ staff, This seems to be a section of such succinct and good advice. I don’t know that I have much more to say other than the fact that I treasure these words. V 13 is a verse that I should keep on my mirror during hard and difficult times… “ And after their temptations, and much tribulation, behold I, the Lord, will feel after the, and if they harden not their hearts, and stiffen not their necks against me, they shall be converted, and I will heal them.”… as it will help me to stay strong through rough times.   V 15 “ Exalt not yourselves; rebel not against my servant Joseph ;” V 19 “ Wherefore, withersoever they shall send you, go ye, and I will be with you; and in whatsoever place ye shall proclaim my name an effectual door shall be opened unto you, that they may receive my word.” V 22 “ Inasmuch as they shall humble themselv...
