5/12/2018 - Section 96:1--9

May 12, 2018 Section 96:1-9 Contention, Problem Solving, Temple Importance, Book of Mormon Importance, Work Place Importance, This section was given after the Kirtland council had met to consider how to use the French farm in developing the city. The council could not come to an agreement as to who would oversee this project, BUT they could agree to take the matter to the Lord. That is a great way to work directly toward solutions, and away from conflict and contention! V 1: We become so used to church terminology, that we can forget the meaning behind that terminology. “ To pitch a tent, one drives stakes into the ground to secure it. The deeper the stakes, the stronger and more stable the tent. The revelations of the Lord compare Zion to a great tent, whose stakes are its support and therefore must be strong .” (student manual 227) The Lord has instructed them to build a building for the presidency of the church, and a building for printing, and a t...

5/10/2018 - Section 95:5-17

May 10, 2018 Section 95: 5-17 Called but not Chosen, Walking in Darkness at Noonday, Charity, Service, Contention, Obedience, Growth in the Gospel, In v 5 the Lord talks of those that called, but not chosen. The student manual had a comment (p225) on this phrase, that made me examine my ways: “It is one thing to be called to labor in the vineyard and another to be faithful in the performance of that work. Only those who faithfully fill their callings are chosen by the Lord for exaltation in the kingdom of God. Those who are called but not chosen “have sinned a very grievous sin, in that they are walking in darkness at noon-day” [v6], for they do not respond to the light of the restored gospel that surround them.” (see also D&C 121:34-40)—which I looked up. The part that stood out to me as I read it was “ …but when we undertake…to gratify our pride, our vain ambition, or to exercise control or dominion or compulsion upon the souls of the children of men, in any...

4/11/2017 - Section 10:35-70

April 11, 2017 Section 10:35-70 Christ as Judge, Christ as Guide, The Gates of Hell, Nedra, Endure to the End, Contention, The Lord’s Way, Hen Gathereth Her Chickens, V 37 is Christ’s tender teaching to Joseph Smith after Martin Harris had lost the 116 pages of the Book of Lehi. “ But as you cannot always judge the righteous, or as you cannot always tell the wicked from the righteous, therefore I say unto you, hold your peace until I shall see fit to make all things known unto the world concerning this matter.” The Lord not only sees into my heart, but He sees into everyone’s heart. He alone is the one who can truly judge. That brings me comfort, for most of the time I am trying hard to live up to His commandments. And if I keep in contact with Him and petition Him, He will lovingly direct my thoughts and actions in a way that will benefit me AND those around me whom I might be able to help. It is so interesting to me that not only did the Lord know that the Book of Lehi t...
