10/30/2018 - Section 122:1-9

October 30, 2018 Section 122:1-9 Trials and Tribulations, Endure to the End, Atonement, Lord’s Closeness to Us, This is the second revelation that was received over a 5 day period when Joseph was in Liberty Jail. This is how one description that went right to my heart: “ The five months of imprisonment, abuse, malnutrition, and separation that the Prophet Joseph Smith and his friends suffered in Liberty Jail in Missouri contrast starkly with the sublime communication sent by the Prophet to the suffering Saints.” V 1 speaks of the harsh experiences that Joseph Smith will receive from men and from hell. President Kimball said, besides fulfilling prophecy, this negative attention is in one way a good sign: “We can…tell that we are making progress by the attention we get from the adversary….This has been the lot of the Lord’s people from the beginning, and it will be no different in our time.” April 1980 Gen Conf In verses 4-7 the Lord details various, an...

2/27/2018 - Section 88:6-13

February 27, 2018 Section 88:6-13 Light of Christ, Christ Light of, Atonement, Christ as Our Example, Growth Experience Can and Should Bring It, V 6 describes what Christ did in coming to earth and atoning for our sins—and that’s the way I have always thought of the atonement: that Christ suffered for us in order to allow us the possibility of turning to Him, requesting His help, and allowing Him to heal us in whatever way we need at that time. So essentially I have seen the atonement as an amazing sacrifice of Christ that allows Him to help us. But this verse opened up another aspect of the atonement that I have never considered. “ he descended below all things, in that he comprehended all things, that he might be in all and through all things, the light of truth.” The experience of the Atonement for Christ was definitely for us, as he did take upon him our sins, he suffered for us, he suffered all the pains and worries of all the people of the world. Yes, ...

12/25/2017 - Section 74:1-7

December 25, 2017 Section 74:1-7 Demands of Life, To-Do Lists, Priorities, Mistakes, Leaders Mistakes Of, Atonement, In this section, Joseph has re-commenced his revision of the Bible. The student manual says that Joseph was told to begin this project as early as March 7, 1831. When I look at my life, I often feel I have too many things that I must be doing. One of those things was the demands of a full time job, but I’m retired now. My ‘demands’ now are 1) church callings; 2) home projects that I feel I must complete and not leave to my children (photo albums completed, Waits lifetime correspondence scanned and saved; 3) going on missions which I feel compelled to do, but I know that compelling desire comes from inside me and not from outside pressure and since completing our Japan mission it comes because I now know how much growth and satisfaction and simple joy come from serving a mission; 4) friendships—(something we pretty well neglected in our child rearing days and dur...

12/23/2017 - Section 72:7-26

December 23, 2017 Section 72:7-26 Atonement, Law of Consecration, This part of section 72 speaks of the role of bishop. I found the duties of the bishop in regard to caring for the “poor and the needy” very interesting. The saints are, at this point, still struggling to understand and live the law of consecration. The plan states (v 13) “he who hath not, wherewith to pay, an account shall be taken and handed over to the bishop of Zion, who shall pay the debt out of that which the Lord shall put into his hands.” This ability to pay the debts of the poor and needy comes from the fact that (v15) “every man that cometh up to Zion must lay all things before the bishop in Zion.” To me this is a physical description of the atonement. Christ paid for all the sins of all the people on earth. He gave all the benefit of His work to us. Those riches of forgiveness, and comfort, and aid, etc., are being held and are ready to distribute to each of us in our times of being ‘poor and n...
