7/17/2017 - Section 50:31-46

July 17, 2017 Section 50:31-46 Missionary Growth and Protection, Wayward Children, Personal Revelation, See the Face of the Lord, We are almost finished with our mission papers—we have our final doctor’s appointment today. I mention this because every verse I read seems to speak of missionaries. Leading up to v 35, the Lord is speaking about staying close to Him and following the promptings of the Holy Ghost, and maintaining a firm desire to do all that is right—thus growing closer to Him. The promises for that are in v 35: “ And by giving heed and doing these things which ye have received, and which ye shall hereafter receive—and the kingdom is given you of the Father, and power to overcome all things which are not ordained of him.” None of us enters…or leaves…our mission perfect. But hopefully, we WILL leave our mission with softer hearts, having worked to help others in their gospel and their temporal lives, having worked to see all people as Christ sees them, and working a...

6/18/2017 - Section 43:1-10

June 18, 2017 Section 43:1-10 Prophet,Follow Prophet,Authority Church Line,Personal Revelation,Member Responsibility,Church Meetings,Sacrament Mtg,Sanctification,Covenant Making Blesses,Missionary Covenants, Companionship Covenants, From the time the Church was established, the Lord made it very clear how it was to be led. In D&C 27:7, speaking of Joseph Smith, the Lord stated “ Him have I inspired to move the cause of Zion in mighty power.” By Feb 1831, many of the members had come from congregations in which any member could proclaim doctrine for the entire congregation. I wonder, too, if investigators were always encouraged to pray for their own personal revelation of the truth of the Book of Mormon, if they might have thought they could pray for revelation for other people or for the Church as a whole. This is certainly what Mrs. Hubble did. She “ came making great pretensions of revealing commandments, laws and other curious matters….She professed to be a prophetess o...

June 9, 2017 Section 39:1-24 James Covill, Seeking the Lord’s Advice, Prayer, Personal Revelation, If Then Scriptures, If Then Promises, Missionary Work Definition, This section, and section 40, have much to do about James Covill…and –in scriptural truth-- about all of us. James Covill was a Baptism minister in Ohio. He journeyed from Ohio to New York in January 1831 in order to meet the Prophet Joseph Smith. This is what JS recorded: “There was a man came to me by the name of James Covill, who had been a Baptist minister for about forty years, and covenanted with the Lord that he would obey any command that the Lord would give him through me as His servant, and I received the following...” and then begins D&C 39. Christ knows James Covill. In v’s 7-9 He says “ I have looked upon they works and I know thee….thine heart is now right before me at this time….Nevertheless, thou hast seen great sorrow, for thou hast rejected me many times because of pride and the cares of t...
