3/1/2018 - Section 88:14-16

March 1, 2018 Section 88:14-16 Soul of Man, SOS, Resurrection, Redemption, Sacrament Ponders, Earth’s Purpose, I love reading the synopsis of the section. For v’s 14-16 it says “ The resurrection comes through redemption”— that phrase in itself is a grand lesson! V 14 states a truth that I believe with all my heart and mind: “ through the redemption which is made for you is brought to pass the resurrection of the dead”   On Sundays during the sacrament I find myself settling in to mostly ponder the atonement, and how I do and should access it, and my gratitude for that amazing and wonderful gift of love. But then I listen as they pronounce the blessing on the bread, and I realize I need to be much more consciously grateful for the gift of resurrection that I, too often, just accept as a fact of life. The older I get, the more reason I see to be more grateful, and express that gratitude. V 15 defines the word soul: “ and the spirit and the body are...

2/27/2018 - Section 88:6-13

February 27, 2018 Section 88:6-13 Light of Christ, Christ Light of, Atonement, Christ as Our Example, Growth Experience Can and Should Bring It, V 6 describes what Christ did in coming to earth and atoning for our sins—and that’s the way I have always thought of the atonement: that Christ suffered for us in order to allow us the possibility of turning to Him, requesting His help, and allowing Him to heal us in whatever way we need at that time. So essentially I have seen the atonement as an amazing sacrifice of Christ that allows Him to help us. But this verse opened up another aspect of the atonement that I have never considered. “ he descended below all things, in that he comprehended all things, that he might be in all and through all things, the light of truth.” The experience of the Atonement for Christ was definitely for us, as he did take upon him our sins, he suffered for us, he suffered all the pains and worries of all the people of the world. Yes, ...

2/26/2018 - Section 88:1-5

February 26, 2018 Section 88:1-5 Desires of our Hearts, Holy Ghost, Peace Spiritual Peace, Service, Growth, Spiritual Growth, This section was given during a 2-day conference in Kirtland where Joseph and 9 high priests had gathered to know what the Church should do “ in view of the critical times that have been predicted.” Joseph referred to this section as “ …the ‘Olive Leaf’ which we have plucked from the Tree of Paradise, the Lord’s message of peace to us” In V’s 1-5 Christ tells them that by “ assembling yourselves together to receive his will concerning you: Behold this is pleasing unto your Lord, and the angels rejoice over you; the alms of your prayers have come up into the ears of the Lord…” The Lord waits for us to come unto Him. He notes our righteous desires and actions. It is by continuing with those desires and actions that we really do receive the Olive Leaf. I know that I have felt His comfort settle over my mind and body—it is a gift I as...

2/21/2018 - Section 87:1-8

February 21, 2018 Section 87:1-8 Civil War, Obedience Rewards Of, Follow the Prophet, Pray for Faith, I find it very interesting that this section that prophesied conflict that would come to be known as the Civil War in the United States came at a time when “ the brethren were reflecting and reasoning upon African slavery on the American continent and the slavery of the children of men throughout the world.” I also find it very interesting that it was received on December 25 of 1832. I don’t know if I would have spent my Christmas holiday in such prayerful thought and discussion—even though in reality, what better thing could you do on Christmas than celebrate Christ’s birth by trying to understand and help make the world a better place. V 1 begins: “ Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls;”   Th...
